Diving in Bali: Discover the World-Class Underwater Wonders Beneath the Waves

Published July 07, 2026

From the legendary USAT Liberty shipwreck to manta ray encounters at Nusa Penida, Bali offers some of the most spectacular diving in Southeast Asia for all experience levels.

Bali's reputation as a dive destination has grown enormously in recent decades, and for good reason. The island sits at the convergence of rich ocean currents that feed some of Indonesia's most biodiverse marine ecosystems. Whether you're a beginner taking your first underwater breath or an advanced diver seeking rare encounters, Bali delivers world-class experiences. **Tulamben — The USAT Liberty Shipwreck** The USAT Liberty, an American cargo ship torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1942, lies just 30 meters from shore in Tulamben, making it one of the most accessible wreck dives in the world. The 120-meter-long hull is now completely encrusted in soft corals and sponges, and teeming with thousands of fish. Divers of all levels can explore sections of the wreck, with the shallowest parts reachable at just 5 meters. **Nusa Penida — Manta Rays & Mola Mola** Nusa Penida's waters are famous for two legendary encounters. Manta Point offers regular sightings of majestic reef mantas gliding through cleaning stations, while Crystal Bay is one of the best places in the world to encounter the bizarre Mola mola ocean sunfish between July and October. The strong currents at these sites require intermediate to advanced diving skills. **Amed — Relaxed Reef Diving** The black sand beaches and calm bays of Amed on Bali's northeastern coast offer excellent reef diving with great visibility. The "Japanese Wreck" — a small patrol boat resting at just 28 meters — is a popular site. Amed is also home to a diverse range of macro life including ghost pipefish, pygmy seahorses, and nudibranches. **Padang Bai — Blue Lagoon & Tanjung Jepun** Padang Bai's Blue Lagoon is Bali's best beginner dive site, with calm conditions, colorful coral gardens, and abundant fish life at accessible depths. For more advanced divers, Tanjung Jepun offers dramatic walls draped in sea fans and occasional sightings of sharks and barracuda. **Getting Certified in Bali** Bali is an excellent place to complete a PADI Open Water certification, with numerous dive schools offering courses from around IDR 3,500,000 for a full 3-day course including equipment and multiple ocean dives at beginner-friendly sites. The warm water, excellent visibility, and abundant marine life make learning to dive here an unforgettable experience.
